What began as a livelihood mission for women affected by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy has grown into a thriving craft ecosystem rooted in sustainability, creativity, and dignity.

Since the early 1990s, our artisans began experimenting with natural ingredients such as iron, pomegranate peel, fruit skins, mud, herbs, and minerals to achieve rich, earthy colors. After months of trials—washing, sun-drying, dye mixing—they mastered a chemical-free block printing process.

“Kalam” means pen, “kari” means art. Kalamkari at MSK began when we discovered that many women were gifted natural painters. With support from the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, our Kalamkari programme grew into a full-scale creative unit.
